BYOC

1. What is your favorite genre of movies? (comedy/romance/horror/action)

Romance and especially romantic comedies and then comedies.  I also love dramas and movies based in another era, like 1800's or early 1900's.  I used to really love blow-'em-up-beat-'em-up movies as well as horror movies but I can't deal with them now.  Being startled or scared causes problems for me nowadays.  I have to be in a particularly great mood and be feeling very secure and comfortable to watch said movies and those days where it all comes together like that are just rare.

2. What do you order when you eat Chinese food?

Changes all the time.  Some faves are....mu shu pork, chow fun, mein fun, general Tso's chicken, kung-pao chicken, dumplings, wonton soup, egg rolls, crab rangoon (techinically not really Chinese food, I know), orange-peel beef, beef with broccoli...want more?

Chinese food is one of my all-time faves.  That and Vietnamese and Japanese and Thai and...basically...Asian...

3. Okay no one kill me for this one - and don't answer if you don't want to BUT I just saw some preview for Dr. Phil on swingers and I wondered - what's your take on swingers.....for it, against it, do it, would never do it, etc.?

Whatever.  You do your thing and I'll do mine.  I will never judge anyone for their interests and preferences even if it's not for me.  But swinging...not for me...unless it's swinging from a doorjam....

4. Let's go back to a repeat question. Pick one thing you'll do one next week that is for your physical/mental health.

hmmm....

So I'm already drinking enough water...

And I'm lifting weights 4 nights a week...

And I'm swimming 2 days a week (or more)...

And I'm eating all my veggies and fruits and generally getting "enough" protein...

So...next week...I'ma read.

One night next week (at least), I'll crawl into bed and pick up a book or magazine instead of turning on the tv.  It may not be a self-help book, got plenty of those on the shelves to read and I need plenty of help, but it will be a book and me and my imagination.  And I'll turn on some music that makes me all calm and peaceful and crap.  :)

5. Repeat question. Which blog or comment stuck with you the most this week and why?

My Draz.  She's been tested this week big time and she is beating this test into submission in rapid order.  She is such an inspiration!

And Carmen's post about her mom.  What a role model she had (has)!  Carmen's strength is impressive!

And Pie's comment to me to get an app for my phone.  That app is making me realize things I always thought I knew but didn't really.

07/30/10: It's Friday and that means...

  • I have now blogged five days in a row.
  • Did you think I was still capable of this?
  • I probably won't do this next week.
  • Next week I start my "gateway exam" which is a 450 question test that I have to pass to be eligible for my next promotion.  It's broken up into 19 tests and each one is timed.  And I must pass all or I'll have to retake the whole thing.  I'll have two weeks to do this - but I'm taking two days off around next weekend(Aug 6 and 9) so that I can head out to Cali to be with my grandmother on her 85th (and my 35th) birthday.
  • I've literally done nothing this week.  No work whatsoever.  I've had two vaguely work-related conversations.  But other than those, I've done absolutely nothing "productive" for my company.
  • On the other hand, I've done a lot of productive reading for myself.
  • I still have a lot of reading to do.
  • But the more I read...the more I lose.  This week has been awesome.  3 pounds...and it aint over.  My newest low this morning...although it was yanked away from me just as the scale flashed to it's result for the day.  It bounced back and forth and back and forth between 215.6 and 215.8 for ten seconds before flashing to 216.0 at the last flash, which was the official number.  I like 215...and I want to take credit for it...since the scale seemed to be so unsure.  But I'll stick with my 216 for today and hope that tomorrow...or Sunday...
  • 215 is what I was when I met my hubby.
  • He's moving into unchartered territory now.  :)
  • Baby-making is fun.
  • Did you monitor your BBT when trying to conceive?
  • At Pie's prompting, I went and searched for an app for my iPhone and found one that's awesome!  It's called iPeriod.  And it does A LOT.  It did cost me money but I was willing to pay, in this instance, because this is a valuable tool for so much more than trying to conceive.
    • I'm using it conceive.  (Not 100% guaranteed, of course, but it's a good tool.)
    • you could use it to try not to conceive.  (Not 100% guaranteed, of course, but it's a good tool.)
    • you can track
      • your weight
      • your moods
      • your BBT
      • your days
      • your cycle
      • your "symptoms" (which could be related to just about anything female)
      • your fertility (if you do or know how to check some of that stuff)
    • it gives you summaries and graphs and an idea of what to expect
    • and this info...that I've been accumulating now for about three days (although I backtracked and updated a few days before I downloaded the app) is telling me more than I ever knew about  my body.
    • I feel so tuned in....and I didn't think I wasn't....
    • even my hubby likes it!
  • I figure monitoring my BBT is about like getting on the scale every morning.  I'm just curious.  And if it turns out to be useful or helpful information...well, great.  If not, well, at the very least I've learned something.  Won't mean anything this month...but maybe next month it might.  Seems worth it, to me, to see what I might could learn.  (Like that?  I don't usually like things like "might could"...but it seemed appropriated...)
  • What else....
  • What do you know about exercise/weightlifting while pregnant?  Was I offbase in what I said the other day?  (Basically, that I can weightlift so long as the exercise does not have me lieing down.)  Just because I can, does that mean I should?  What would you do?
  • I've gotta talk to my Dr...
  • Let's see.  The baby-making/pregnancy obsession I had earlier this week is actually waning.  So I'm probably gonna go quiet on this topic for a bit.  No guarantees...but...not obsessing about it today like I was on, for example, Tuesday...
  • We are going to a friend's for dinner tonight.  I can't wait.  She's such a fabulous cook!  Yep, I'm looking forward to eating.  She's making us homemade spring rolls, homemade shumai, and homemade pad thai.  She also is making us boiled shrimp, a fruit plate and a veggie plate for pre-dinner snacks while soaking in their gorgeous pool.  This friend works with my husband so he gets to see her regularly, while I, on the other hand, have not seen her since Christmas.  It will be great to catch up!  I can't wait, too.  Sitting here thinking of what a great evening it will be while having no work to do at work is just torture.
  • So...looking forward to eating...should be interesting...since I've been claiming left and right...that I can't eat.
  • I logged into my GoBe's online tracker and put in there what I would like to eat tonight to see how the calories worked out.  I can have two spring rolls, two shumai, 4oz of shrimp and all the veggies I want.  I'll stay away from the fruit, actually, since I had my smoothie (which is 4 servings of fruit) this morning and fruit can make calories add up quite a bit faster than veggies can.
  • Doesn't sound like much, eh?  Well.  It won't happen.  That's my prediction.
  • I told my husband what I could eat.
  • He laughed.
  • Said "that won't happen".
  • I am gonna bet that I'll end up with one spring roll and two shumai and 2oz of shrimp.
  • And I will enjoy it all.
  • But I'll also be sad.
  • What I described above adds up to ~440 calories, 30g protein, and 29g carbs.  That 440 calories also includes one glass of red wine.
  • That's not a lot.  It's not bad and it's not a lot and it's a treat, anyway.  I won't get to eat her spring rolls and shumai again until Christmas.  And I've been really good this week.  I've eaten out once - my one time for the week - and it was a good eat out choice.  My lunches have been on track, my dinners have been on track, I've exercised according to plan.  This week, and especially when compared to the last six, has been stellar.
  • So I want to enjoy.  Want want want to enjoy.
  • And I'm betting it won't happen.
  • Yet....I'm still looking forward to it.  Of course, I'm looking forward to the company more than anything.
  • I think it's odd.  Because I can't eat right at the moment, I'm actually obsessing about food more than I used to.
  • The last time we went there for dinner (pre-band) I was vaguely aware that I was going to eat fabulous food and was specifically aware that I was going to enjoy great company.
  • Now, it's swapped.  I'm thinking about what I want to eat.  I'm preparing for what's wise and ok.  And I'm thinking about how I'll feel when it blows up in my face.  Think there's a self-fulfilling prophecy there?
  • That's why I think I'm too tight.  I had soooo hoped for that perfect balance of restricted enough to not be able to overdo it (like I did last time I was there for dinner, pre-band) but not so restricted that I was worried about whether I'd enjoy it and be satisfied.  I had soooo hoped for that perfect balance of just not having to worry!
  • But that's not where I am.  I get stuck.  Stuck makes me feel full (a good thing except this happens at bite #3).  Feeling full after 3 bites.....so not satisfying.
  • Now....here's the whacky part.
  • I think I need another fill.
  • WHAT?
  • I can't eat...satisfaction is a thing of the past....and I want more?
  • What kind of crazy logic is that?
  • I have an appt scheduled for Aug 10.  I wanted it for
      • in case my infected incision still hasn't closed up (which it hasn't, completely)
      • in case I somehow needed a fill
    • if neither of the above situations were applicable, I'd cancel it.
      • well...the infected incision is almost completely closed up.  So...in the next week...that reason might get taken off the table
      • and the fill is a trick
  • It just occurred to me...I need to change it.  No matter what.  I'll be on my (.) on Aug 10 and I'm wide open on those days (and a few leading up to it).  I need my fills to be middle of my cycle.  I think that's why my last fill has ended up feeling so tight...I was on my (.) at the time...and so it looked like I needed more than I did (they do all fills under fluoroscopy).
  • Do you get that I'm totally rambling?
  • I have no work to do...so what else can I do but ramble?
  • Have I ever told you my husband is a saint?
  • Seriously.  He is.
  • He puts up with me.
    • and that's a TALL TALL order!
    • Very tall.
  • And....he somehow keeps a smile on his face while doing so.
  • Have I ever told you that I love lifting weights?
  • Love it.  Really.  Feels great.  My body responds soooo well to it.
  • I once heard that we have exercises that our bodies gravitate towards.  Running...swimming...biking...chances are you like one of those better than the others.  For me...it's swimming.  And weightlifting.
  • Did I tell you I ran...this would have been Tuesday night?
  • Funny story.
  • I ran.
  • At a good pace (for me), 6 on my treadmill.
  • For over a minute.
  • Know why I stopped?
  • Nope, not because I was tired.
  • Nope, not because I was out of breath.
  • Nope, not because of a stitch in my side.
  • Nope, not because I fell off the treadmill.
  • It was because my pants fell off.
  • I don't know what's funnier though...that my pants fell off....or that I ran.
  • I think it was that I ran...
  • Ok...enough babble.  You probably need to get on with your day...
  • Have a great weekend, y'all!

Random Facts about Texas

  • Texas is the only state in the union that has had six different flags flown over it.  At various times, Texas has belonged to
    • Spain
    • France
    • Mexico
    • Itself, as a Republic
    • the confederacy
    • the USA
  • Texas is the only state in the union that can fly it's state flag at the same height as the national flag.  All other states must have their state flags below the national flag.
  • It is a fallacy that Texas has the right to secede.  Texas does not have any special rights and does have the same right (or lack thereof) as any other state to try and do so.
  • Texas just surpassed California earlier this summer as the state that people want to move to the most.
  • Texas' state flower is the bluebonnet although the yellow rose is also closely tied to Texas.
  • Texas' state bird is the Mockingbird
  • Texas' state mammal is the armadillo
  • Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the nation.  (side note, I'll be curious to see if this changes when the new census data is released later.)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth is the sixth largest city in the nation...but that's a misnomer as the two cities have to be tied together, so it's more of a metropolis than a city.  It's still the sixth largest populated area in the country.
  • San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the nation.  When comparing just San Antonio to Dallas, San Antonio ranks higher, but Dallas is almost always paired with Fort Worth.
  • Texas is the second largest state in terms of population surpassed only by California.  Texas replaced New York as #2 about ten years ago.  As a former Californian, I suspect it won't be long before Texas is #1 in population.
  • The name Texas comes from the Caddo Indians' word 'Tejas' which means "those who are friends".
  • Texans are considered some of the friendliest people in the nation.
  • Texans still believe in courtesy, consideration, and manners.
  • Texas has it's own Army and Maritime forces.  It is the only state in the union that has continually had it's own forces.  (Most other states assemble forces when needed, in times of war, basically, Texas has forces assembled at all times.)
  • Texas' nickname is "The Lone Star State"
  • From east to west, the state is almost 800 miles (~1200km).  From Houston to El Paso is farther in distance than El Paso to Los Angeles.
  • From north to south, the state is over 800 miles (~1250km).
  • The state of Texas is one of just a few that has two time zones.
  • Texas has more Fortune 500 companies within the state than any other state.
  • The world's largest medical research center is in Texas, in Houston, to be exact.
  • Houston is also the oil capital of the world.
  • After 9/11, a lot of the finance sector diversified their location and instead of having everything in NYC, it was spread around the nation.  Houston became home to a lot of the finance sector in that process, accounting for about 1/3 of the nations finance activity.
  • Texas has two NFL teams, the Texans and the Cowboys (American football), both of which are in the top 10 (of all sports) for team worth and money-making ability.  (That list is topped by Manchester United, btw.)
  • Texas has three NBA teams, the Rockets, the Spurs and the Mavericks
  • Texas has two major league baseball teams, the Astros and the Rangers
  • Texas has one NHL team, the Stars and one AHL team (the highest level of the minor leagues), Aeros.
  • Texas has two MLS teams, the Dynamo and FC Dallas (soccer, aka football)
  • Texas has the second largest theater district in the nation, in downtown Houston.
  • Texas does not assess an income tax and instead, derives the majority of the money needed by the state from mineral rights.  (yes, predominantly oil)
  • Texas has the 30th largest economy in the world
  • It used to be that only Texas and California could sustain themselves as stand-alone nations...but now it's only Texas.
  • Texas is home to the world's largest rodeo - The Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show.  Forth Worth also has the Forth Worth Livestock Show which is the world's longest running livestock sale and show.
  • Texas weather/climate varies greatly from east to west and north to south.
    • West Texas and South Texas - desert with average summer temps above 100 and less than 10 inches of rain a year.  Average winter temps are in the mid-60's.
    • North Texas - prairie land with average summer temps above 90 and 20 inches of rain a year plus snowfall (just minor dustings, nothing major).  Average winter temps are in the low-50's.
    • Northeast Texas (Dallas area) average summer temps around 90 and 40 inches of rain a year.  Average winter temps are in the low-50's.
    • Southeast Texas (Houston area) average summer temps around mid-90's and 60 inches of rain a year.  Average winter temps are in the 60's.
    • Mid-Texas (hill country, Austin) average summer temps in the upper-90's and 30 inches of rain a year.  Average winter temps are in the 50's.
  • Texas has more farmland than any other state.
  • Texas has more working ranches than any other state.  One of those ranches, King Ranch, is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.
  • Texas has the least populated county out of all counties in all states in the US with a population of 67.  People.  In the county.
  • The deadliest natural disaster occurred in Texas in 1900 when a hurricane hit Galveston island and over 8000 people lost their lives.  Most people did not know what "the eye of the storm" was and so when the storm "passed", people went out to assess the damange.  And then the storm roared back to life as the eye passed catching thousands of people off guard.
  • Galveston was once the richest city in the US and was in the 1800's what NYC is now.  It was the vacation spot of vacation spots and where the wealthiest people chose to live.  The "mansions" on the island are worth taking a peak at (IMO).
  • Galveston island is two miles off the coast of Texas, connected by a bridge.  There are a lot of wetlands between the mainland and Galveston so you don't really realize how far offshore you are.

I hope you have found this interesting.  I love Texas, personally.  And I can be honest and say that as a kid/tween/pre-teen/early-20-something, I SO did not love Texas.  It's an interesting story that got me to Texas for college...but while here, I learned that I (as well as most other non-Texans) was just so wrong about this state.  I think, now, with the way that people are moving into this state faster than homes can be built, that the misconceptions have been reduced and/or eliminated.  While I miss the beaches of Southern Cali...and the mountains, as well, I love being in Texas.  It is such a peaceful life here in which you really can do your own thing, be your own person and just take care of yourself.  Texans sure love their independence!

07/29/10: Random List Thursday

Still thinking in bullets...but instead of numbers, as in a list, it's really bullets today...

  • Do you know how much I hate defensive driving courses?  So I'm taking this course as it has been written by the state of Texas.  We are forced to take 12 minute breaks between sections.  You can't take the quiz until the break is taken.  You HAVE to answer the question in 30 seconds or you are marked "wrong" and you can only have 13 "wrong" answers in the quizzes.  This isn't the final...it's the quizzes.  And they are mostly designed to see if you are paying attention.
  • Now here's my problem with that.  I've ran into a few questions that were particularly LONG.  (Like my blogs!)  And it took 25 seconds just to read the danged things, let alone the answers.  I'm usually a quick test taker, usually the first one done...but I need to feel like I can at least read the danged thing!
  • I don't see a purpose in that.
  • If you miss more than 13 questions in the quizzes...six quizzes total...you don't get to repeat the section you screwed up in.  You have to take the whole danged course AGAIN!
  • All for the minor fee of $25.  Each time...
  • And the content.  It's trifling.
  • A few months ago I took another defensive driving course just for insurance discount purposes.  THAT seems so totally more relevant and better and applicable than this crap that the state of Texas has mandated.
  • I KNOW to not drive if I'm tired because I might fall asleep at the wheel.  Spending 30 minutes talking about it doesn't make me know it more...I already KNOW it!
  • I KNOW to stop at stop signs and not roll through them.  Spending 30 minutes talking about it doesn't make me know it more...I already KNOW it!
  • I KNOW not to try to beat a train.  Spending 30 minutes talking about it doesn't make me know it more...I already KNOW it!
  • I KNOW that being an organ donor can make a difference.  Spending 30 minutes talking about it doesn't make me know it more...I already KNOW it!
  • I KNOW that distractions while driving make me a dangerous driver.  Spending 30 minutes talking about it doesn't make me know it more...I already KNOW it!
  • None of those things are why I got a speeding ticket.  I got a speeding ticket because I was the only car on the road and I was going 41 in a 30.  Roads in my city with identical situations - no businesses, no homes, no schools, no nothing other than connecting one thoroughfare to another - have 45 mph speed limits and seem realistic.  I believe the road I was on is set up as a speed trap.  But my city claims, right there on their website, that they are not trying to achieve quotas.
  • I'm sure that's not why the cops were sitting in their hidden spots this morning TRYING to write as many tickets as possible.
  • Do you know how much I hate defensive driving courses?
  • This is me doing my course last night.  Don't I look like I'm having a blast?
  • And...to think...I'm paying for this?  The "privilege" to take the course.  The course.  All the certified mail.  I even have to send in a certified copy of my driving record when all is done.
  • And if I don't send it all in on time they will be happy to issue a warrant for me...and collect more money.
  • I guess I should be glad that the city I live in has nothing else to do besides write arbitrary tickets and collect the easy money from that.  The cops could be elsewhere...but they don't seem to have to be.
  • Or do we have too many cops?
  • Is there such a thing?
  • Maybe I'll make this a weekly blog...random list thursday.  Like it?  Wanna do one?
  • I've got a feeling....
  • That tonight's gonna be a good night....
  • That tonight's gonna be a good night...
  • That tonight’s gonna be a good good night wooh hoo
  • I just have that song in my head.  I haven't heard it recently...but for about a week now...it's just playing over and over and over.
  • I'm thinking of putting together a random facts about Texas blog.  Either that or I might start including one tidbit at the end of each blog for a little while.  I've read a number of random facts about X lately, Canada, Dubai, etc, and I saw Lynda say at some point that she thought she'd do one on the US.  Maybe she has already and maybe she's still working on it...I'm catching up...so maybe I'll see it and maybe I won't...depends on if she's done it yet or not.  But then it occurred to me that in addition to random facts about the US...random facts about the 50 very different and unique states could be fun, too.  I've lived in four different states, California (21 years total), Illinois (1 year), Hawaii (3 years) and now Texas (will be 10 years on Aug 3rd), and each state has been different and unique while also bonded to the others with quite a number of things in common.  I think, with just the blogs that I read, that we have a good sampling of quite a number of states...anyone wanna do their state?
  • I think I'll do the whole blog idea.  Will get it posted soon.
  • Have a great Thursday, y'all!

07/28/10: Questions and newness and ideas galore

  1. Do you have a lap-band?
  2. If so, do you have kids?
  3. Have you been pregnant with a lap-band?
  4. If you had kids before the lap-band and now have the lap-band, do you want to have more kids?
  5. If you got pregnant with the lap-band, when did you tell your surgeon?
  6. Did you get all fill removed?  Or just stop getting fills?
  7. If you got pregnant after the lap-band, did you lose all your weight first, and then get pregnant?  Or some of the weight and then...

I'm not losing all the weight first.  I have lost 49 pounds so far and maybe I'll lose more before getting pregnant (God willing) and maybe I'll magically get pregnant in the first month of really actively trying.  (hahaha)  I'm at a reasonable weight now, in my case, I believe, for a pregnancy and while there's still more to lose and things could be better....I'm also turning 35 in just over a week and age is a consideration, too.  I'd hate to lose all my weight, then try to get pregnant and not have it happen just because I'm older.  I have a cousin who's an ob/gyn and she specializes in reduced fertility and infertility and she told me, after I got married, that 90% of her patients are people who waited until 36 to start trying.  If I lose all my weight first...I figure I'll be 36...so it seems worth it to start trying now.

I decided yesterday that I needed to know if I could still lift weights while pregnant.  Yes, mostly.  I, apparently, am not supposed to do any exercises that have me lieing on my back - like a bench press.  I can, however, do an inclined bench press, which is supposedly harder - although I, personally, think it's easier.  No situps unless I'm on a ball.  Things like that.  I am doing about 5 exercises right now between my two routines, (Mon/Thurs = legs, lower back; Tues/Fri = abs, arms, chest, shoulders) that would have to be cut out.  But I do "too much" - 4-5 things for my shoulders/chest; 4-5 things for legs; 4 things for my back; 4 things for abs; 4 things for arms - as it is...so I can cut out the stuff where I'm lieing on my back and not worry about if I have something in place...because I do....since I do "too much".

I told my husband that last night and he said "talk to your doctor".  I declared "I know everything, I don't need to talk to my doctor".  HAHAHA.  Luckily, he gets my sarcasm and that received quite a bit of laughter from him as he had one more realization that I'm not as stubborn as I try to seem.  Of course I'll talk to my doctor!  Of course of course of course!

My husband asked me last night who we would tell first.  So we came up with a list.

My blogger buddies are high in the pecking order!!!

We came up with a cute idea on how to tell his parents together...I'll send it to you once they know....which won't happen until we know something...and who knows when that will be.

In the meantime, we are having FUN!

  1. In other belly news, my belly is changing A LOT! When I was at my heaviest, I could not suck in my upper tummy and see my ribs - and that was while laying down, not even remotely near standing. Now...I don't have to suck in to see my ribs...and when I do suck in...there's a sinkhole there.  And that's while standing...not laying down...
  2. I think my craving for candy is actually waning.  I had a clue on Mon night when I forced myself to eat a candybar.  I can tell you what my logic was in that force but let it be enough to say, I was being goofy to get the goofiness gone.
  3. Worked...cause last night...I couldn't even force myself.  Even though my day ended at 760 calories...I couldn't make myself pick up the candy I had.  Nor could I drink a soda.  Nor could I eat a piece of cheese.  I couldn't make myself eat anything...
  4. That's more like me.
  5. I spent two hours working out last night.
  6. I got on the scale this morning and it said 216.  That's my lowest low so far.  No one at my job has ever seen me this little.  I was in the 230's when I started with this company.  My husband met me at 215.  I was 180 for about a year in 2004-2005 and so once I get past 180, no one in Texas will have ever seen me that small...except for my aunt...who lives in Austin now...she saw me growing up...had me in her wedding when I was 19...and knows what my "ideal" looks like.  She's the only Texan who has any idea....
  7. She loves to show me pictures from that wedding and tell me that I "was so incredibly gorgeous".
  8. I like it when she compliments me.
  9. My heart breaks for Drazil.  I want to fix it for her.  I also want her to be able to enjoy rain!
  10. I'm making progress in "catching up".  I love all my blogger buddies!
  11. My face is breaking out like I've never seen it before and my hands, the palms, are itching all the time.  It's very weird!
  12. A little quirk I have...I am constantly "rubbing" my face.  If it feels "rough" to me, my hands want to scratch the roughness off.  So with this breakout, my hands are just drawn to my face...which is just making it WORSE!  I know that...but I can't stop.  I have no idea where this habit came from...but it's there...I'm ok if I'm around people and/or doing something but when I'm sitting at my desk and spending days and days just reading blogs and not actually working...the hands are at the face....scratch rub scratch rub...
  13. My poor skin....
  14. I am doing a defensive driving course tonight for a ticket I got back in June.  Grrr....
  15. Haven't had a ticket in years...since 2003.  Been a long time.  And this one...the cop hides out...and I know he's there...and he got me anyway....
  16. Oh yeah...maintenance...yeah...I realized last night...it's gonna be tricky.  I was maintaining at ~1200 calories a day.  Really more of a weekly bank scenario of 8400 calories a week.
  17. But my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is higher right now because I'm still carrying more weight than I should be.  As I lose, my BMR will fall.  So does that mean that I'll have to be at ~900 calories a day, just as a hypothetical conversation point, to maintain?  Scary stuff.  I will be interested, of course, to see how this all unfolds over time.  I don't know what I'll have to try for to get maintenance to work out...but chances are, when I get to 142 lbs, 1200 calories a day will be too many, since that's what's making maintenance work right now...
I guess that's all for today.  Seems like I had more...but I can't remember now...so I'm gonna call this blog done.

If you have been pregnant with a lap-band...I really want to hear from you.  If you've been pregnant at all....I'd really love to hear any advice or thoughts you might be willing to share.  If you want to comment, feel free, if you'd rather email, then feel free to do that, too.   ldswims0808@gmail.com

Anyone have any thoughts on fertility monitors?  Ovulation kits?  Linda's comment yesterday was helpful to me and prompted a conversation with my husband last night...but I'd love to hear more ideas.  Like Linda said in her comment, I am so paranoid that I won't be able to get pregnant....

Have a great day, y'all!

07/27/10: Thoughts

Random thoughts so list order today....

  1. I've been meaning to get this out there for a week now but with the migraine last week...sorry...it's just getting out there now...
  2. The main thought for today...I have effectively had a month of no weight loss.  Some might call that bad.  I'm THRILLED!  I wasn't trying to lose weight.  I wasn't doing anything to lose weight.  I was just being.  I was enjoying my vacation, I was busy-bodying through a number of things...and really, this "month" ran from June 7 through July 19 - so really, more than a month.  July 19 and onwards is when I really started working on my food to be "weightloss enabling".
  3. What does "weightloss enabling" mean?  It means I am cognizant and caring of my portions.  It means I am working on avoiding grazing.  It means I am not justifying a candybar as "well, I've worked hard this week and my calorie count for the day is low".  "Weightloss enabling" also means, to me, that I am truly using the tool that my band is.
  4. So for a month...I didn't care.  I was absent-mindedly aware of portions.  I was grazing.  I was not exercising for a variety of reasons.  I was not doing anything to lose weight, I was just being.  My just being was necessitated by "classes" and travel and life being out of the norm (but oh so wonderful and exciting).
  5. And I did not gain any weight back.  I didn't lose.  I wasn't trying to.  I didn't gain.  I wasn't trying to.  I was trying to be.  And I was.
  6. That, to me, is what maintenance should be, when I get there.  And I just had a sampling of it.
  7. Life before the band - if I was just being, I was gaining weight.  Now, I just finished a month and a half of just being and I maintained.  That has me so super-major excited!  When I can follow a routine, things are fine.  Things go whacky when the routine is erased or wiped out.  And my routine, as is anyone else's, gets dictated by life sometimes.  The band is amazing!
  8. I did not set out to see if maintenance was going to be what I thought it was going to be.  I, actually, had set out, on June 7, with the mindset that I was just going to keep doing what I'd been doing...eating mostly right...exercising...because A LOT of good things come from both of those actions/awarenesses.  But it wasn't doable with that danged Turkey Shoot and it's taken me this long to get myself "righted".  But, now, looking back, I see that time period for what it was - a glimpse of what maintenance will be like, in my case.  And while I don't ever want to slip back to my "badness" for good...a little bit of it won't kill me.  Life is too short to spend it worrying about what I'm eating or whether I'm exercising "enough".  I want to do that as a second nature, not as a stressor.  And while it's not quite second nature, it's getting there.
  9. In the past, I wouldn't have come back around as quickly - if you'd consider 6 weeks "quickly".  In the past, I would have gone off the bandwagon, if you want to consider it that, for whatever reason, and I'd have started to gain...and then I'd get depressed/frustrated...and then I'd throw in the towel.  Not gaining this time...that's huge!
  10. In that time span of 6 weeks...I drank sodas.  Yep.  Bad little bandster.  I was having one a day, on average.  In my classes, we were given free sodas...you could just walk to the fridge and grab one.  We were actually asked to limit our water because the water bottles were so much more expensive.  So I got in the habit of one soda in the afternoon.  And that carried over to home life once I was done with those classes.
  11. I drink soda.  I always will.  A shockingly cold cream soda on a hot day is just danged good.  I won't EVER say I will never have one of those.  A shockingly cold, nice, crisp Dr. Pepper is refreshing.  That peppery bite...just does something for me.  Not every can I open does that...I have to not drink them all the time to get that peppery refreshment...and I've learned how to control that in myself and that's progress.  Before the band, before getting ready for the band, I drank 3 (or more) sodas a day.  Not diet.  Not zero.  Not anything other than full soda.  I know, now, that my calorie intake problem was from those sodas.  My biggest problem, anyway.  They add up FAST!
  12. Just like staying on budget.  Ever noticed that it's all the little things that screw a budget over.  Not the regular things like electric bills and cable bills and mortgages.  No.  It's the trip to Cheddars here.  The trip to Kim Hai there.  The quick lunch at Sonic then.  The random trip to Kroger for cheese afterwards.  It's so minimal you don't think much about those...but at the end of the month...when you are balancing your checkbook...it's THOSE then and there's that make the budget blow up.
  13. Learning how to eat better has also made me look more closely at my budget.  Controlling my intake has also given me clues to better control the household budget and saving is now easier than it's ever been!
  14. Anywho.  Back to soda.  I'll always drink it.  I even drink them while eating.  I know. Bad bandster.  Smack me.  I don't care.  You can say what you like but in MY case, drinking a SMALL (read small) sip of soda can help, as I say, "tickle the food down".  It forces a burp.  And the action of that burp, if I can visualize my esophagus and my stoma, relaxes the stomach enough to let whatever is stuck through.  I have had two times where my small sip resulted in food NOT going down, but I've had hundreds of times where it helped.  That's just me.  You can say it's bad and it's wrong and I'll believe you in your case.  But for me, a small sip of soda HELPS me.
  15. Well, because I've been so tight...I've been grabbing my daily soda to drink with my dinner.  I'd open it and use it if I needed to.  Most of the soda would go down the drain because if I didn't need it, I wouldn't drink it and once I'm done eating, I do wait 30 minutes to drink anything more.  And 30 minutes later, the open soda would be warm and flat.  So it would get tossed.  On average, out of a 12oz can, I've been drinking about 1/3 of it.  Yes, I've even gone as far as measuring what I'm throwing away so I can log it and count it in my daily calories.
  16. Anywho.  Now that I'm thinking I'm a big part of my problem, I'm not letting myself get that soda any longer.  I've now gone 4 days without a soda.  Prior to last month's classes...I was allowed one a week.  I am working on getting back to there.  Last night, after my wonderful workout I wanted something.  And a soda could be that something.  But, I thought, I don't want to use up my soda for the week on Monday.  Monday is the start of my week...and if I drink it on Monday...well....
  17. Back, before the classes...I was doing something similar...and there were quite a few times where it got to Sunday and I just didn't want the soda...and so no sodas were drunk that week.
  18. It's interesting "getting back on the wagon".  It's like now I have an opportunity to take what was working (before the classes) and I can also make some changes and try something new.
  19. Like candybars.  I, apparently, am developing a sweet tooth.  I seem to be coming in, on an average day, at 800 calories a day.  I just can't eat more, am not interested in it, can't do it, can't make it happen.  But it's not enough and I know that.  And at 8:30 when I want that last little something...a candy bar is what I'm turning to.
  20. About two weeks ago we decided to buy the little bite sized bars.  We got three or four different kinds, two I wanted and two my hubby wanted.  We were allowed one a day.  So I was getting one....of each....
  21. Oops.
  22. We ate those up and I said...how about we just get one normal size candy bar when we go grocery shopping each week.  And if we eat it that night, then it's done.  And if we save it for later in the week, then there it is.  And my hubby said, sounds good.  So we did.  And that's working.
  23. But who am I that I all the sudden want candybars?  I don't like chocolate or sugary sweet things.  And yet...here I am...wanting it.
  24. I will say, I've had spans in the past where I wanted candy.  And it lasts about a month or so...and then it goes away as suddenly as it started.
  25. I will say that I hope it goes away soon.
  26. But I'm not going to deprive myself.  Much as I probably should, in this case, if I demand to myself that I CANNOT...then I will go crazy with wanting it.  Whereas if I satisfy the craving and let this insatiable need for sugar be satisfied, historically I know that for myself, it will work itself out.
  27. But I consider that a bandwagon issue, too.  As much as I can say historically, yada yada yada...it's also not like me....
  28. And yet...even with eating candy bars (daily, for two weeks) and drinking sodas and not caring about portions, so much, and not exercising...I DID NOT GAIN WEIGHT.
  29. Do you know how exciting that is?
  30. Because even though I didn't care about portions, so much, I still was eating less than half of what I used to.
  31. Because even though I wasn't exercising, I was active because I felt better carrying almost 50 pounds less than I was this time last year.
  32. Because even though I was drinking sodas, I was only allowing myself one a day and usually didn't drink all of it.
  33. Because even though I was eating candy bars, well, I was eating too many of them and if I hadn't done that, I probably would have lost...but who cares...because I didn't gain...and I enjoyed my Twixes.
  34. The number of this bullet is the age I am today.  In one week and five days...
  35. I will be this age.
  36. My husband turned this past weekend what I will turn on Aug 8 .  We are saying that by the time that we are the age of this bullet...we will have a baby.  That is our hope.
  37. I pray to God that we can have a baby.  We are very actively trying right now.  I'm obsessed with what my body may or may not be telling me.  I keep googling random things that are happening to see if it could mean I'm....
  38. Why can't science come up with a test that tells us news faster?
  39. One of my friends at work just came back from a month long vacation.  Before he left, I was in class.  I haven't really seen or talked to this guy since the beginning of June.  He told me yesterday that it was really showing in my face.  He told me today "You are looking lean and mean".  Things are definitely flatter.  Wanna hear something funny?  My stretch marks are moving UP.
  40. Yes.  UP.  They used to be beside my belly button.  Now they are above my belly button.  And there's not nearly as much jiggle as there used to be.  Not done by a long shot...but it's definitely better.  I'm not conscientous of walking naked in front of my hubby anymore.  He's seen a lot of naked recently.  And that's with eating candybars!  Good Lord I love this band!
Have a great day, y'all!

07/26/10: A case of the migraines

Well...last week sure blew up!  I started Sunday (of last week) completely wrong with the DirecTV guy showing up WAY TOO EARLY to do the install.  Sunday blew up to become exactly what it never ever ever should be.  A very stressful day.

I went to bed Sunday night with the start of a migraine but a prayer that my sleep would help me out.

Woke up Monday with a migraine really ready to take control but me still just in enough to keep it at arms length.  But by Monday night, my arms were buckling.

Tuesday it was on.  I wasn't fighting the migraine with sleep and exercise was out of the question.  My basic remedies were proving to be useless, so I called my PCP's office and scheduled an appt.  I have never been seen by my PCP for migraines.  I used to use the VA hospital and I still had drugs from them through most of this time I've been with my PCP.  But now...this time...I had nothing.  Luckily, they were able to get me in that afternoon.

Went to that appt and I was given "Midrin".  I believe that the Navy docs used to give me that and it used to work pretty well if taken quickly enough to get a foothold on the situation.

Went home, closed the drapes, closed the bathroom door (do you know how much light comes in our bedroom through that danged door?  It's CRAZY!), took a Midrin and crawled in bed.  And then ding dong.

The DirecTV guy is there to fix/finish the install that led to the crazy migraine in the first place.

If you'll remember from a post last week, my migraines come from a combo of stress, exhaustion, and whacky weather.  I can't control the weather but usually all three things don't happen all at once.  Well, sad as it is, my stress, the stress that put me over the edge, anyway, was DirecTV sending us the world's most incompetent technician.  And to be fair to DirecTV - it wasn't them that sent that horrid tech...it was the third party contractor.  But I can't imagine anything going more wrong with that install.  And to get it fixed, we were, or rather, "I" was on the phone with DirecTV for over an hour on Sunday, for an hour on Monday, and then another FOUR hours on Tuesday.  The tech that was sent Tues night was completely clue'd-in...but a fubar on the part of the third party contractor manager would have still had us not set up right.  By about hour number three I was ready to cancel the service and tell the tech to take all the equipment with him but DirecTV really came through in making me a fabulously happy customer.  And the picture is a gazillion times better than it ever was with Comcast.  1080p vs. 1080i makes a HUGE difference!  And when you've invested in a 65" plasma tv, picture COUNTS!

Well, by the time the poor tech (And I mean what I say...I was yelling and furious at multiple points in that evening, all, of course, aggravated by a now running-away-from-me migraine!) left, I was done.  I tried to double dose the Midrin...ok, that's a whacky statement...I didn't take two.  I took one...and two hours later tried another thinking it would knock me out faster and sleep could work it's wonders faster.

Well.  That partially worked.

Wednesday the migraine was a dull roar.  Not gone but not horrible, either.  So I'm up and about and proceeding through my day....

Nothing of note.

But Thursday.  MAN OH MAN!  I was SCREWED!

Thursday afternoon with the Midrin not doing a danged thing, I called my PCP back and asked for something else to be tried.  And I slept.

Friday my PCP finally called back.  They had called in a prescription for Maxalt.  I dragged myself out of my bed and out of my cave to go around the corner to the pharmacy to pick it up.  And I went home.  And I took my Maxalt.  And I closed my eyes.  And half an hour later I felt this odd tightness in my chest and my jaw.  And I felt fuzzy.  Like if you'd tried petting me I'd have been fuzzy.  And half an hour later those weird sensations were gone.  And so was the migraine!

About an hour later the migraine was telling me it wasn't giving up without a fight.  So, when my two hours was up, I took one more Maxalt as I was allowed to do.  And half an hour later, fuzzy tightness again.  And half an hour later I was officially back to being a bonafide human being!

I took it easy, slept some more, chilled out, did nothing to re-aggravate the migraine.  Saturday I was aware that if I took one wrong step, the migraine would be back.  My husband's birthday was on Sunday and a good part of his celebration was set for Saturday.  He wanted to see Toy Story 3 and our closest theater was offering it at a time we liked.  But when we got there, they said, it's in 3D...is that ok?

Yeah...Not thinking 3D would be good for a migraine that's just begging to come back.  Add in the 3D ticket price and we said we'd move on.  We went to a theater half way to Galveston (we were going to Galveston for dinner) and ended up in a theater that charges $2.75 for the matinee price.  Did you know theaters with that ticket price still existed?  We didn't!  And this theater is a mere 15 miles from us.  Well worth the drive considering our closest theater is $7.50 for a matinee.

Toy Story 3 was a great movie!  And that's coming from somebody that doesn't usually like cartoons!!!

From there we went south some more to Galveston island.  I went by my old apartment from when I was in college and was surprised they haven't been knocked down yet.  They were nice apartments while I was there - it was on a marina and you could rent a boat slip with your apartment.  Right on the water with a little boardwalk that went along the waters edge.  I liked living there!  And my apartment was pretty nice, too.  I think.  For a college kid.  Hurricane Ike knocked out a few of the buildings, but not all.  But the whole property has been condemned unless someone will step up to buy it and fix it.  But these buildings have been sitting for almost 2 years now...with windows blown out and gaping holes in roofs...seems what might have once been fixable probably isn't now.  Sadness.  I always have to drive by, though, just to see if maybe something is happening now.

We drove the Seawall and were very pleased/surprised/impressed to see the island was PACKED!  And then we wandered over to the Harbor side of the island and went to Willie G's for dinner.  One of our favorite mega-conglomerate type seafood restaurants.  The wait was over an hour and the bar was full so we went across the street to another restaurant to have a drink.  I ordered my martini, my birthday-boy ordered his margarita.  And then he says to the bartender, 'what's your name?' to which the bartender replies 'Ivan' and then bursts out 'Fred **********'.  The bartender and my husband were in band together high school back in the day.  My husband was a senior when Ivan was a freshman but they played the same instrument and so became friends because of that. So there was a bit of catching up and a 'guess what X is doing now'.  And then finally, Willie G's called.  Instead of giving us pagers or writing our name on a list, they ask for our cell # and call when the table was ready.  Gave us freedom to be wandering around...

So we had our fabulous dinner and actually wandered back across the street for desert and after dinner drinks.  Desert for me, fave of all faves is actually a cup of coffee so that's what I had.  My husband, on the other hand, birthday boy that he was, had a tres leches...in a Greek restaurant.  Too FUNNY!

Yesterday was as peaceful as last Sunday should have been!  I finally got to the dishes - and I'm not one for leaving dishes sitting.  My great grandmother had a belief that if you don't do the dishes right after dinner, then you won't, so to make it easy, just do the dishes after dinner.  And she's right.  If I do them RIGHT AFTER DINNER, they get done and the kitchen stays clean.  If the kitchen is clean, so is the house.  But if I let them sit...even for an hour...they may continue to sit through the night.  And if they sit one night...they are likely to sit for two.  My mom was never one to tell me to go clean the kitchen so that she could put her feet up, when I was a kid.  If she told me to go clean the kitchen...then she went to clean the kitchen, too.  So I actually have lots of warm memories of cleaning the kitchen with my mom after some wonderful home cooked meal (which was the norm).  My perfect day ends with the kitchen humming with the dishwasher running as a pot of water sits on the stove to boil for a cup of tea as I curl up to watch a tv show or read a book or magazine.  And my day can be disastrous but if I have that ending, I feel good!  Especially since now it feels like my mom is right there with me!

This is getting to be a long post.  Did you think I forgot how?

So the dishes were done, the laundry was finished, the sheets and towels were changed, my sweet birthday boy husband sat on the couch playing Guitar Hero all afternoon (my birthday present to him) and ultimately we joined one of our favorite neighbors for dinner at one of my husband's favorite restaurants.

As of yesterday, the migraine is finally beaten into submission for once and for all!  And while the weather is still whacky, the stress is dissipating and the exhaustion is a thing of the past!

I had started to make progress on catching up on the blogs but after four days of no reading, I'm back to not caught up again.  But...no work at work right now....so this week should see some progress!

I hope you all have a fantastic week.  I'm gonna try, that's for sure.  Weightlifting starts tonight and eating is getting back to impressively little!

Speaking of eating.  I ate 1750 calories on Saturday.  Lunch - chicken pot pie - really just picked chicken out and ate a fair share of the crust, which was only a topper.  Lunch wasn't bad...but the rest of the day...

Popcorn and a Twix at the movie.
Martini before dinner.  (Dang there's a lot of calories in a martini - but they're so GOOD!)
Wedge salad and lobster bisque split with my husband.  YUM stuff!
Salmon fillet and parmesan risotto with grilled artichoke for dinner.  Ate all the risotto and artichoke and about half the salmon.  Screwed up priorities, eh?
Coffee for desert

1750 calories.

From Saturday morning to Sunday morning I gained 3 pounds!  Woohoo!  I had fun celebrating with my husband!!  I FELT SO INCREDIBLY STUFFED, THOUGH!  Like I'd eaten Thanksgiving.  Painfully stuffed.

Yesterday, the scale continued to drop all day.  By last night at bedtime, I was back to Saturday morning's weight.  Which puts me at a new low.

I still feel like I'm a bit too restricted.  But I'm also learning that I'm part of the problem, too.  Give me long enough and I'll catch on.  :)  I eat too fast.  And it's like...I'm gonna eat like I'm "normal" until the pain kicks in.  However much I can get in...that's how much I WANT to eat.  Once the pain kicks in, I gotta watch my food get cold...so literally, I want to get in as much as I can while it's still warm and yummy-ness.  Then I deal with the pain.

I'm learning, though, that if I eat a bite...put the fork down....let it go down...I feel it.  It goes down...it's not painful, although it's not pleasant.  Big burp...ready for the next bite.  Eat a bite...put the fork down...let it go down...I feel it.  It goes down...same way...finished with a BIGGER burp.  Do it again.  Even bigger burp.  But after ten minutes of this, when the food is now getting cold...well...golly...I'm FULL!  I'm even satisfied.

If I do the way I have been doing - which, ironically, developed on our trip to Vegas, I'm hungry again within an hour or two.

If I do it the new way, even with less food ingested, I'm not hungry for 3-4, sometimes even 5 hours.

I was doing pretty well before Vegas and for some reason, I threw out what was working in Vegas.  Wasn't eating at buffets...but I guess maybe I wanted my money's worth or something?  Or I didn't want to hold my husband up since I take a lot longer to eat quite a lot less.  So I was cramming it in.  But when we got home, I kept doing that.

And while...yeah...goofy stupid me...I'm also glad I'm doing this, have been doing this, and am working through this.  It, for example, led to an interesting conversation with my husband over breakfast yesterday morning.  He wanted to go to IHOP for breakfast on his birthday so we did.  And I ordered their machaca.  Shredded beef and slices of onion and bell pepper all sauted together then scrambled with eggs.  You make burritos out of that and it's so yum.  I grew up on the stuff in Mexico and even in California and it's impossible to find in Texas.  I've taken to making my own...but getting the shredded beef to be what it's supposed to be is a day long process.  So I ordered machaca.  I used to eat 1 or 2 tortillas filled with this.  Yesterday I barely ate half of one.  But I made/let myself take it easy and BE SLOW.  And while I still got stuck...it wasn't the same painful experience as if I'd just crammed it all down.  And stuck for me works out.  It all goes down....just v.....e........r........y  slowly.  But the more bites that are crammed in, waiting to go down...the worse it feels.  If it's just one bite working through...it's ok.  But that's the difference of banded vs. not.  Before band - 2 tortillas, if not 3 (if it was dinner time).  Now.  HALF of ONE!

So here we are at breakfast.  And I'm eating what I want, albeit very slowly and with special consideration.  And I tell my husband, finally, what's been on my mind for a week or so now, that I think I am the problem.  I think the band is too tight...but I'm not crying mercy because I think I might be aggravating the situation.  And he says interesting.  He didn't think that was the case so it was interesting to him to hear what I thought was happening, what I was doing.  And he thought it made sense.  And he agreed, whatever changed, changed in Vegas.  And the change was mostly in ME.

Well.  His weightloss has slowed, too.  Maybe even backtracking.  I don't know.  I know that the scale isn't moving and he's frustrated.  But he's eating my plate when I'm done.  So it's working out to two meals for him and half a meal for me.  Cause even with all the cramming I was doing, I was still eating A LOT less.  The difference between the cramming and what I'm doing now is the grazing.  Cramming was leading to grazing, and being very slow and easy about it, now, has led to A LOT less intake.  Enough so that I am now worried about protein.

Anywho.  So he's finishing my plates.

So we made a pact yesterday morning that from now on...we will order together when we eat out.  We really need to just stop eating out!  But if we do eat out, we will order one plate and split it.

1750 calories on Saturday.  I didn't even think I was capable of that anymore.  Turns out I am...but it DOES NOT feel good.

I have to chuckle.  1750 calories.  That's a lot?  I was groomed to be shooting for 2000 calories a day.  My GoBe tells me I still had a deficit of 800 calories for the day after all the walking and moving around that I did on Saturday.  So 1750 was nothing to worry about.  What a change, though...to be thinking, and feeling, that 1750 calories is entirely too many!

All right.  I'm done.  Have a great day y'all.  If you need me...I'll be reading....

07/21/10: If you never knew...

Good Morning y'all.  Happy Wednesday....

I've had a migraine for going on four days now.  I hate migraines that last this long.  When they last this long, for me, they bring on tension headaches.  Which just make the migraine worse.  I don't feel like I should call in so that I can have my dark bedroom with nothing on...so I'm here...hopped up on drugs...trying to make it through the days.  Luckily, the stars have aligned and so far this week I've had to move data from "archive" to "created".  That took me all of about half an hour yesterday.  I literally did nothing on Monday and nothing yesterday aside from that move...and so far, today...nothing.  I'll take it.  We are in a holding pattern...after all the "hurry hurry hurry" from last week, we (I) can't go forward with my project until another guy sorts out his issues, (which may be rather huge).  So...it has become "hurry up and wait".  I'm good at that.  And I'm also not the reason my project isn't moving forward!  Yay me!

We switched from Comcast to DirecTV over the weekend.  Let me tell you...this process was not easy, seamless, or organized.  We had the worst tech show up Friday (last week) and then Sunday...and he "didn't know how" to do most of what he tried to do.  A different tech came last night to finish the job and a number of things had to be undone to be redone.  That's part of where my migraine came from - it led to stress and my migraines tie to 1) stress, 2) exhaustion, and 3) whacky weather.  If all three things don't align, I'm fine.  If they do, I'm screwed.  So hopefully, with our tv situation FIXED, maybe the stress component will remove.  I'm probably screwed until I get my exhaustion fixed...but that's been my focus this week.  Literally, instead of working out - I'm going to bed.  I woke up this morning better than I have so far this week so I think I'm gaining the upper hand.  I'm gonna try to get a workout in tonight...but sleep is still my priority.  The weather...well...can't do anything about that one.  And I love this weather pattern we are in right now, anyway.  I'm whacky...so whacky weather appeals to me!

So...title..."If you never knew"....

If you never knew just how important blogging is, let me tell you.  It's VERY!

I love my blogger peeps.  I love reading my blogger peeps' blogs.  I love my blogger peeps reading me - and egging, I mean commenting, me on.

I did not get to blog much for the last month.  My weightloss slowed to a trickle.

I did not get to blog much for the last month.  My workouts ceased.

I did not get to read blogs much for the last month.  My motivation waned.

I did not get to read blogs much for the last month.  My sense that I "belong" dissipated.

Now I know it's not that easy to "not belong", just as it's not that easy to "belong".  But that sense comes from involvement and involvement has been next to nill.  And I'm here to say "It Matters!!!!"

As my blogging has increased...and my reading of blogs has increased, so has my weightloss, my desire to workout, my motivation and my sense of belonging.

IT MATTERS!

Sitting here right now, today, I have this feeling like it's the blogging that's gotten me where I am.  Not my motivation to try.  Not the lap-band.  Not my desire to eat mostly the right foods most of the time.  It's the blogging!  It matters!  The blogging makes me treat the band better.  The blogging makes me motivated to try harder.  The blogging makes me want to be inspirational which makes me try harder which motivates me which makes me feel like I belong.  And by blogging I mean both, the reading AND the writing.

If you never knew...IT MATTERS!

I love the blogging world.  I love what I read.  I love what it does to me.  I love the personalities I get to see and the perspectives I get introduced to.

I don't ever want to go so long without reading again!  I don't ever want to not blog for a month again!

I know that reality is that things will pop up and this may have to happen again out of necessity.  But I know that I want to catch up and do what I can to always keep up.  If I have to go quiet, that's one thing, but I don't ever want to go dark again (not that I wanted to this time, I really had no choice).

I've missed y'all.  And I'm still working on catching up.  And I'm glad I'm "catching up" and not just skipping to today and reading from there forward.  I'd have missed all kinds of fabulous thinking, ideas, perspectives, stories, and attitudes if I had.  Every story out there, that I get to read, is absolutely amazing and inspiring.  So thank you to you, the bloggers that I read, the bloggers that I follow, and the bloggers that follow me.  You all make me a better person!

07/20/10: Can you do it?

Is my (self-diagnosed) reverse body dysmorphic dysfunction tied to the fact that I can't look at people and say "she's a size 20 and she's a size 6".  Is my Reverse-BDD tied to the fact that I can't look at people and say "she's 20 pounds overweight and she's 100 pounds overweight and she's 10 pounds underweight"?

I can look at someone that's perfect (in my eye) and say "she's perfect".  But I can't look at someone that I think is overweight (like myself) and say "she's 80 pounds overweight.  Looking at me...I'd say...I need to lose 100.  But I also know that if I lose 100 more...that puts me at 115 and for 5'6" bordering on 5'7" that's WAY too skinny.  But that's what I'd say.  Looking at me today.  That I'm overweight by 100 pounds.  Even though I'm not - not by 100 pounds.  And I know that.

When I was 20 pounds overweight...I thought I was 60 pounds overweight.  When I was 120 pounds overweight...I thought I was 60 pounds overweight.

Reverse-BDD.  And maybe even BDD, too.  I had it when I was skinny thinking I was way too fat.  And then I had it when I was way too fat thinking I still had tone and curves.

But I can't look at anyone and say anything other than just right.  So not being able to make that comparison...or lack of one, even...does that tie to my dysfunction?

A good sales lady in a bra shop, in a clothing shop, even at the carnival game booth where they guess your weight - they can do that.  They can say "40 pounds overweight and probably a size 10".  I have no idea how to do that.  In my eye...I'm either fat or not...there's no in between...and I can't remember a time where I thought I wasn't.

But reality is there is in between.  When I was 130 and "fat" (at 5'7") my friends called me Barbie and loved to play dress up with me.  I wasn't fat.  My BMI was healthy (if you believe in that system) and my body fat was at a whopping 18%.  But I saw fat.

Can you do it?  Can you look at someone and think "she would be "perfect" if she lost 10 pounds?"  Can you look at someone and think "she would be perfect if she dropped one dress size"?

Just a question based on a random thought.  Believe me, I'm not worked up over anything regarding this.  I am losing weight.  I am seeing curves where my reverse-BDD eye could only imagine them just six months ago.  I am gaining muscle and therefore appear to be working toward that toned look.  I have ankles again.  I LOVE ankles!  But in an effort to understand this body dysmorphic dysfunction and how it's playing tricks on my eyes...this question popped in my head and I thought...ah...blog!  So here I am.  I am not upset with my body or wishing it was different.  In reality, I am pleased with my progress and with how different my life is today in comparison to this time last year and even ten years ago when I was skinny and thought I wasn't.  I think that today I actually do see me for me.  But I don't want to get to 140 (or somewhere in that ballpark) and be surprised when the reverse-BDD switches back to BDD.  I think I have to retrain my eye...and I think this question might help me.  Can you do it?  If you can, do you think you have any form of BDD?  If you can't do it, do you think you have any form of BDD?

I can't do it.  And I think it does tie to BDD, reverse or otherwise...

07/19/10: This sucks!

To all the Chicago attending B.O.O.B.s and all the B.O.O.B.s that wanted to....I'm bummed.  I am now, apparently, joining the ranks of the "want to's".  We've had to cancel our trip to Chicago which was going to be followed with a trip to WI to see my in-laws.  A few things have fallen apart over the past two weeks and we just can't swing this trip.

There's part of me that wants to scream "it's not fair" but I also know it is what it is.  And someday in the future it will work out.

So there's my big "This sucks".

No other real news with me.  I'm exhausted and I have a migraine that is going back and forth with me.  Came on last night and I went to sleep.  This morning it was still there.  But I had no choice but to go to work today and it dissipated slightly this morning but is now back with a vengeance.  It's the whacky weather that always gets me.  I have to have three things align to make migraines happen and they are all in place right now.  Exhaustion, stress, and whacky weather.  Exhaustion and stress only - I'm ok.  Whacky weather and exhaustion only - I'm ok.  But you add in that third component, whatever it is, and I'm done.  I rarely get them in the summer because the weather is usually better...but it sure is whacky this year!

Started the weightlifting again last week and didn't succeed in finishing the week.  That exhaustion thing.  Not going to bed, last week, until 1am each night and back up at 5...you just can't sustain that...and by the end of the week, it was all we could do to just get home and fall on the couch.  Thank God for leftovers!  At least I didn't resort to fast food again!

We had some friends over to swim on Saturday and my friend commented to me that I look great.  Aww...thanks!  She asked how I've been doing with everything.  I said it's been pretty awesome.  For the last four weeks (prior to last week), I was not able to work out or even cook at home for a variety of reasons.  And through those four weeks, my weightloss did not stop - although it was a trickle.  I was eating fast food and not weightlifting or swimming much or anything and I would say I was able to maintain where I was.  I did not slide backwards!  Before the band, that would have been a downhill slide situation.  THAT is why I wanted the band.  Life happens sometimes!  I know I should be better about making workouts happen no matter what but sometimes there just isn't enough time in the day and we have a horrendous commute.  I have learned the things I can order for fast food that don't screw me over, too, and then the decreased appetite helps.

I am finding that getting to eat food is interesting, still.  I thought, at the end of last week, that it was loosening up again, and Saturday, I was fine, for example.  I ate my three meals and I ate what I wanted to - just the right amount at each meal (on average, 4oz for me, and I rarely finish that nowadays) and no snacks.  I could eat what I wanted, just not much of it.  Friday was good - smoothie for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch and pulled pork smothered cheese enchilada for dinner (so healthy, eh?)  Saturday was good - smoothie for breakfast, chicken tenders for lunch with one southwest egg roll, and dinner was chicken enchilada casserole.  So then I'm thinking, Sunday should be good, too.  Smoothie for breakfast - fine.  Genghis Grill for lunch - nope.  Chicken and green beans for dinner - nope.

It's so weird how it's so day to day.  One day I can eat....the next day...food goes down v.......e.......r.......y......slowly.  So weird!  So inconsistent.  I was thinking this month would be better than last because maybe hormones affect it...but...nope.  I don't know what it is.  I just know that one day it's fine and the next day it's not.  If they tried to give me a fill on Saturday - they'd think they needed to give me more.  If they tried to give me a fill on Sunday - they'd think they needed to take some out.  Odd.

Well...not much else going on with me.  Hoping this migraine goes away so that I can be me!  I want to workout tonight but I know that working out with a migraine is horrific...so I won't try...if I can just have a window I'll take it.  Since I've already had a window this morning...I'm hoping I can get one tonight, too!  And then sleep.  I WANT SLEEP!

I have to finish with thoughts on Chicago.  It sucks.  I hate this!  There are so many people I want to meet and put reality to.  I hate that y'all will go and create some fun and fantastic memories and I'll be left on the sidelines wishing I'd been there.  But everything happens for a reason, that much I know, too.  Maybe it's not this year...hopefully it will be next year.  But I WILL meet y'all.  It WILL happen!

07/14/10: It's definitely a Wednesday

Although I can't begin to tell you what that means.  Yes.  It's a hump day.  Yes, we are equidistant from the weekend we just left and the one we are headed to.  Yes, it's the day of the week when you are full on working and yet no longer dousing fires that were created over the weekend.  So...yes...it's definitely a Wednesday.

Whatever that means...

Good or bad...

I'll take good!  We are marching, pretty rapidly, I think, to the weekend.  YAY weekends!

I had my follow-up appt today with the surgeon so that he could look at the infection.  I told the guy who took my vitals and weight that it's mostly better with a touch of not.  I told the nurse who took me back that it is mostly better with a touch of not.  She looked at it.  Said my surgeon would be right in.

And he was.  And he looked at it.  And he said "all better".

Hmmm...but what about this touch of not?

Saturday it looked all better.  I mean - it was closed, it was a nice mild pink (to match the scar it belongs to) and it was looking almost normal - for an incision scar that's only three months old.  Sunday...a little dot reappears.  DANGIT!  Monday, little dot grows.  Double dog DANGIT!

Tuesday...closed up and perty in the morning.  Open in the evening.

Today...starts draining again.  And bigger than yesterday.

See....things like that...they worry me!  Draining?  Growing?  I don't proclaim such infections with such inclinations as "all better".

I shoulda kept my mouth shut!  He dabs on some betadine and grabs a swab.  I'm thinking, ok, another culture - but not on the skin, maybe somehow, nicely, an internal culture.  NOPE.  He pinches the area around this wound and scrapes off the scab with the wooden stick portion of the swab.  He then dabs it, since it's bleeding and all.  With the blood cleared out of the way, he takes the wooden stick and starts digging around inside the wound.

I think when he did the surgery he cut a nerve bundle that's been slow to wake up.  THANK GOD!  It felt like an itch instead of all out PAIN!

Yeah...that was then.  Now it hurts.  But back to the story.

After sufficiently digging around and getting ALL old scab off and away, he then says, 'there's probably still a stitch in there that's aggravating it.  But the infection looks good.'

I shoulda kept my mouth shut!

Oh well.  I am happy he did some homework.  And it IS mostly pink and much better looking than this time last week.  He did tell me to go back to using peroxide so I'll keep this dot of mine clean and healthy and we'll see what happens between now and the next fill.

When all was said and done, the nurse, who'd been standing there beating on my surgeon to make him treat me nicely, asked if I could have a fill.  He looked at my chart and said, sure, if she wants one.

So the nurse looks at me.  NO!

I can't eat.  If I ate 2oz at dinner last night, I'd be surprised.  I turned to my tried and true yogurt and granola to get some protein and calories in after dinner failed...but I am not eating.  So, NO...I DO NOT WANT A FILL.

As I was walking out, my belly started to growl.  So I figured, well, it aint easy gettin appts here so I'll make one for a month and if I don't want a fill by then, then I can cancel it.  Or if I need this dot looked at again...I'll have that option.  It's for the day after we return from our trip to Cali...so hopefully I can get to the point where I can eat a little before we go.

I'll be curious to see how tonight goes.  With this fill that I've now had for over a month, I learned, before we went to Vegas, that if I did not drink my smoothie for breakfast and did not eat my chicken salad for lunch, I had no hope of eating for dinner.  And I'm talking about, I ate breakfast and I ate lunch, just not mushy stuff - more like eggs for breakfast, for example, and a panini for lunch - most of which did not go down.  But if I do drink my smoothie and I do eat my chicken salad, then dinner can be ok.  Today is the first day that I'm getting back to that...so hopefully it makes a difference for dinner.  But there's something about trying to eat solid food for lunch (or even breakfast) that was making dinner a no-go.  But...like I said...today it's been all mushies...so hopefully my dinner will work out today.  And...dinner tonight...what I'm making...it's pretty saucey, too.  So hopefully this all helps!

In the meantime, I managed to gain a pound!  I love it.  I CANNOT EAT - and I gain weight!  Priceless!

Ok, I'm not worried about the pound in the slightest.  I started weightlifting this week.  And I'm hittin the weights HARD with this "cycle" (if you remember my five week plan).  I am sore as all get-out - which I love love love love love.  But if I'm storing enough lactic acid in my muscles to be as sore as I am - it's not hard to understand why I've gained a pound.  I'm flushing flushing flushing - something I've been bad about lately, too - so I'm thinking that this pound will work itself out shortly.  I'm certainly not going to be a gracious host to this new pound...or any of the lingerers, either....so there.

I'm enjoying my calming down life!  I like routine.  Routine is good.  Routine helps!

That's about all I know.  I'm reading reading reading and I feel like I'm getting nowhere.  I know I'll feel like I'm somewhere when reader finally can register the number instead of just telling me "too friggin many to read".  I do like reader - do you?  Makes it a gazillion times easier than the dashboard...

Happy Wednesday, y'all!

07/12/10: Now what do I do?

Well, y'all...I think it's finally happened.  For real.  I am finding that I am having to....work....at work.  ARGH!

Now what do I do?  My priority is absolutely all of my favorite blogger buddies...

But I also gotta pay the danged mortgage.  Unfortunately, we didn't pull off any miracles in Las Vegas...so I have to appease the powers that be at my fabulous company.

Argh.

Don't they know and understand that their work and dictation of my time are not MY priority?

Ok, all that aside, I really am happy to finally be showing them what I can do.  They have faith in me, suddenly, for passing that danged "turkey shoot".  And I can't let them down.  I've wanted this for SO LONG.  So I must do something with it.

Unfortunately, this is translating into no time for reading or writing blogs.

Now hear me out.  This is a little temporary.  My family has a website and I vanished from that in addition to blogger.  I'm about caught up on my family - and that's important cause we are having a family reunion in Cali next month and I need to be able to be in the conversation with these people whom I love dearly and call my own.  Each person has a designated day to write on - so it works out to about three blogs per person per month.  Not a lot to catch up on.  I have one aunt left to "read".  And then I can turn my attention to my much favored blogger.  And try to catch up on my "1000+".  I guess blogger can't count as high as I gotta read....

So, no, you aren't getting comments from me for now.  But I'm tryin, I really am!

In other news...still losing weight.  Still losing inches.  Still can't really eat.  My infection looks a gazillion times better.  I have a follow up appt with my surgeon on Weds.  I am curious what he'll say.  While it's a gazillion times better - it hasn't changed at all since Friday/Saturday.  So will these antibiotics take it all the way to "healed" or is there still something lingering?  I will be very curious to see what my quack surgeon says....

Much as I think he's a quack...I want his opinion this time!

I lost 3 inches between going to Las Vegas and my measurements I took yesterday.  That impressed me.  I like losing inches.  Seems that I lose inches and then the scale acknowledges the loss...so hopefully the scale will show some real movement in the next bit of time.  I have no idea how long "next bit of time" might be, though.  I started weightlifting again today and that has me thrilled.  Because of the turkey shoot and then getting ready for Vegas and then being in Vegas and then trying to get caught up on sleep - I was off my weightlifting routine for four weeks.  I'm happy to be starting it back up again.  I'm scared that what I've been losing lately is the muscle I built with my first bout of weightlifting...

Whatever.  I'll build it back.

Speaking of muscle, I told a colleague today I've lost 45 pounds.  He said, my goodness, that's a 4 year old kid.  Can you imagine picking a kid up that you love and never being able to put him down?  Then he said, well, you probably don't realize that because it didn't come off all at once.

I say, though, that what's interesting to me is that when I look at comparison photos...I am standing up straighter.  I used to be 5'7".  But when I started this process I was definitely 5'6".  Can I get back to 5'7"?  Some one of these days I'll go in for a fill and I'll ask them to measure my height....

But if you look at the slide show on the right side bar...you'll see what I'm talking about.  With the last photo update that I did, suddenly, I just seemed taller between the photo just before and the latest photo.  And my husband says he sees it in quite a few pictures.

Next....clothes.  I put some pants on today.  Last time I'll ever wear them.  When they fit, I could wear my typical shoes.  Today I had to wear heels to keep the hem from dragging on the ground.  And they still drug.  When I took the heels off...the pants were very much on the floor with me standing on them.  Funny stuff!

And yeah, I can wear heels again!

Last...I started my (.) yesterday.  This cycle and last...my cramps have woken me up in the middle of the night.  And I have to lay there in misery until I can get the cramps back under control.  And it's taken two hours both times to get the upper hand again.  I hate cramps.  I hate, especially, being woken up in the middle of the night because the cramps are so danged bad.  This is a new development with me...and I DO NOT LIKE IT!  But, I have also noticed that with what weightloss I've had already, my cycle is much more like clockwork than it was this time last year.  I used to, back in my thin days, be incredibly regular.  Always started every 4th Tuesday at 9:15am.  Now, it's Sunday...and it's 11am...but it's been spot on the last few times.  With the regularity has come an increase in the cramps....grrrr.  My "irregular" was still within a day or two of each other...I'd rather that irregularity than cramps that can't be controlled without narcotics!  Especially since I have no narcotics and I don't want any!

Frustrating.  I'm tired.

Maybe my weightlifting will help next month....

I gotta find something....

That's about all I got.  We had a wonderful weekend of laziness and a perfect amount of errand running - i.e. out and about-ness with no real agenda.  Some wonderful pool time - my tan is working itself out nicely!  A nice restful weekend which was just what we needed.

Love to you all!

I'll catch you when I can!!!

BYOC

BYOC everyone! 5 questions - some funny, some serious - we answer in our blogs to get to know each other better and to ease our fried brains on Fridays!

1. Love or money? High salary or job satisfaction?

Love.  Job satisfaction - I wouldn't be satisfied if I weren't paid enough but "satisfied" encompasses so much more.

2. What is your favorite time of day?

4:30pm.  The end of my workday.  When I get back to my husband!!!

3. My in-laws just had their wills done so it made me wonder this. Do you have a will? Did you tell anyone your wish to be kept alive or not?

I don't have a will but have been meaning to.  My husband knows my intentions if something were to happen to me.  We ask each other that 2-3 times a year, actually, just to make sure it hasn't changed.  We need to create all of it, though.

4. Repeat question. Pick one thing for one day you'll do next week that aids in your physical or mental health.

On Monday I will begin cycle 2 of my weightlifting routine.

5. Repeat questions. Make someone a superstar for a moment...whose comment or blog stuck with you this week and why.

Just barely starting to read again...today...I've got nothing...

But I will say all the comments about yesterday's blog, while so simple (cause it was a simple blog) and the rapidity with which they came in absolutely touched my heart.  I truly felt like I had been missed and that was an awesome feeling!

07/09/10: What's this?

Me?  Two days in a row?  Is that even possible anymore?

My hubby told me to do it.  :)  Said he needed something to read.

http://www.restaurant.com/ struck again.  We took a friend out to dinner last night for his birthday.  The birthday boy wanted to use a restaurant.com gift certificate so we found a restaurant there.  A $25 gift certificate for a whole whopping $2.  Yes.  2 bucks.  We went to a place called Fuad's.  Fuad's is special.  They have no menu.  You spend all day thinking about what you want and you go in there and you tell them.  Come up with about the most complicated thing you can think of and generally, they'll say "ok".  First time I went, I did come up with something complicated and it was awesome.  Last night I decided to be nice.  I asked for shrimp.  He says, scampi ok?  Sure.

They also do their caesar salad tableside.  It's the real deal and it's awesome.

They also do their bananas foster tableside and they cut a ringlet off an orange and drizzle the flaming 151 down that ringlet.  I don't care for bananas foster, too sweet for me - but hubby and birthday boy said it was the best they'd ever had.  It's fun to watch the preparation - but I'll stick with my spectacular cup of coffee!

Ok...now please...no more fancy meals.  Three in less than a week is pushing it for me.  Odd thing to complain about, eh?

I count myself as pretty danged fortunate.  :)

We are looking forward to a weekend of nothing.  Lounging by the pool, grilling when we are hungry, sleeping in, getting stuff off the DVR...

Gotta take care of the DVR...we are switching from cable to satellite and we gotta get these shows watched.  Or lose 'em.  Seems we can't sit still long enough, here lately, to keep up with the DVR.

Another fortunate blessing!

Isn't it odd how being off of your routine can really change things?  The whole time in Vegas I was struggling to eat.  Didn't worry about what I ate cause 1) I was walking a ton and 2) (more important) I was on vacation and didn't care.  Yesterday I updated my calorie tracking...yeah...my struggling to eat still worked out to an average of 1500 calories a day while we were there.

Not bad...I'm not complaining...and I lost...and I'm losing...but being off the routine and losing control of my food preparation really threw things out the window.  Interesting...

My RNP...the one I saw on Tues about this infection...she called me yesterday.  To see how I was doing, how the wound was looking.  Awww!

Yesterday I wasn't sure what I thought but today I think it is definitely looking better.  Yesterday I wasn't sure what I thought but my hubby thought it was looking better.  Today I think it's looking better and my hubby thinks it looks the same as yesterday.  Eyes can be quite odd!  However, I think it looks a lot better today!  Noticeably!

While I was talking to the RNP she made sure that I had an appt with my surgeon next week.  And she also logged into the lab system to see if results for the culture had been posted yet.  It was a preliminary report she saw but preliminary results are showing no growth.

It's still kinda red...but whereas there was a definite dot that was open before, now it is completely scabbed over and when wet, the dot seems to be gone.  ie no opening.  I like no opening.  No opening makes me feel all kinds of better!

That's about all I got.  Maybe I'll go see if there's a BYOC for me to do...I haven't done one of those in ages....
